Picture a chilled, black pint with a creamy head and it’s probably a ‘nitro stout’. An Irish-style stout that has been nitrogenated to deliver a smooth, textured and creamy finish. Nitro stouts challenge the norms of traditional brewing, offering an experience that is smoother, more refined and indulgent.
It all starts with that slow, luxurious pour from the bar tap that builds your anticipation. Then there’s the creamy texture and taste that makes traditional stouts seem almost abrasive in comparison. Reduced carbonation allows the rich and often complex flavours of the stout to really shine through, without the interference of gassiness.
The typical ingredients in a stout include water, malted barley, hops, and yeast. But for a nitro stout, the game changes slightly at the carbonation stage. Here’s where brewers play a bit of a trick: instead of carbonating strictly with carbon dioxide, they introduce nitrogen.
This little twist is what gives nitro stout its characteristic smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Nitrogen bubbles are smaller and finer than carbon dioxide bubbles, creating a less prickly sensation on the palate.
Outland Stout is our take on a ‘nitro stout’, with its classic Irish-style flavour, dark malty finish and sessionable 4.1% ABV. Brewed with a trio of hops and roasted malts, it delivers exceptional balance with hints of coffee and chocolate, and a touch of caramel sweetness.
Our new Outland Stout is classic in every way, but with one big difference. It’s brewed right here in Dorset. And it’s available on draught now exclusively at Hall & Woodhouse pubs across the country. Grab a pint soon and discover a path less travelled.
